Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi took full responsibility for the red card that saw goalkeeper Jonas Omlin sent off early in yesterday’s defeat to Augsburg, as Gerardo Seoane’s side missed out on a chance to climb in to the European places in the Bundesliga table.
Elvedi’s unfocused back pass to central defender Ko Itakura forced Omlin to rush out of the net. Attempting to beat Augsburg attacking-midfielder Fredrik Jensen to the ball, Omlin awkwardly tackled the FCA player, with match official Florian Exner having no choice but to send Omlin off.
“I take 100 percent of the blame,” Elvedi said afterwards. “It was a bad back pass from me. I thought Ko Itakura had got in front a bit, but unfortunately he hadn’t. I’m really sorry for Jonas. It was his first start in a long time – and then I get him sent off.”
To his immense credit, Elvedi did try to atone for his error as the match progressed. Elvedi and fellow defensive colleagues Itakura and Joe Scally were all part of a triple scoring chance off a corner in the 36th minute. Shortly before the half ended, Gladbach attacker Robin Hack also had a chance to take the lead.
Unfortunately, everything fell apart in the second 45. Augsburg’s Alexis Claude Maurice scored a historic “flawless hat trick” and the game ended in a 3-0 loss for die Fohlen.
“In the second half, however, it was too easy for Augsburg,” Elvedi noted. “Then there was also the fact that our strength waned at some point. When you go a man down after half an hour, it’s going to be tough.
”We have a top team with solid character,” Elvedi concluded. “We know how to deal with defeat. I trust we can put this game behind us quickly.”
