Borussia Mönchengladbach trainer Eugen Polanski made no effort to disguise his disgust after his team’s latest poor Bundesliga outing. A 3-0 away defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt now leaves Polanski’s foals winless in six straight fixtures. After opening up 2026 with an impressive 4-0 home win over Augsburg, the Niderrheiner have looked consistently limp in three lopsided losses and three low-scoring draws.
Borussia Mönchengladbach back in relegation race
With 22 points picked up through 22 rounds of Bundesliga football, Gladbach have slipped down to 13th place in the table. As evidenced by a 3-13 aggregate scoreline over the course of the last six games, the attack lacks punch while the defense remains dangerously porous. While opponent Mario Götze found Gladbach’s edge in possession and efforts to be worth a mention, Polanski was in a more pessimistic mood.
Polanski’s opening statement
“I’m extremely pissed today because this defeat was absolutely unnecessary and avoidable,” Polanski began in his opening statement. “It’s frustrating when we execute what we want in between the penalty boxes, but are worse than the opponent in both boxes, that’s avoidable.
“It was a matter of quality today,” Polanski continued. “When we maintain a 20-12 shot advantage, but only put three of those attempts on target, there’s a low probability of scoring. I think Frankfurt got eight of their 12 attempts on target.
“We really suffered today as there was a lot more in today’s match,” Polanksi summed up. “Accordingly, I’m very pissed.“
Polanski’s detailed critique
“We were in the opponent’s box plenty of times,” Polanski noted in response to a later question. “We couldn’t hit our target men with simple crosses. We waited too long to shoot. It’s all down to the basics, and I don’t need to cite statistics to prove that.
“There’s no need to engage in ‘could-have, would-have, should-have’,” Polanski continued. “We simply didn’t do it and we need to improve.“
Polanski’s call to execute
“In works in training, but we have to apply it on game-day,” Polanski said later on. “The lads know precisely what they frittered away. I don’t need to explain it to them. It’s all in their heads. If they find some success early [in the match], then their heads will work clearer.“
