Borussia Mönchengladbach trying to extend contract of Ko Itakura early

kicker reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach are trying to extend the contract of central defender Ko Itakura early despite interest from other clubs.

Itakura’s contract at Borussia Park expires in 2026 and the Japanese international has attracted interest from clubs abroad with Napoli and PSV Eindhoven linked to him over the summer. This would mean this upcoming summer is the last opportunity that Gladbach would be able to get a decent price for the 27-year-old before he can run his contract down.

So, Gladbach will try and extend Itakura’s contract early but this will only depend on the financial aspects of the deal, as if Itakura demands an amount out of Die Fohlen’s reach, then it would likely mean he would be sold in the summer.

The 27-year-old has not missed a minute for Gladbach this season featuring in all 14 of their games so far. Die Fohlen are currently 10th in the Bundesliga but are playing, at times, significantly better than they were last season where they were languishing near the bottom of the table.
