Things are not looking good for FC Bayern on the winger front.
The Bavarian giants are understood to be hellbent on reinforcing the left flank this summer ahead of the departure of Leroy Sane on a free transfer.
The German international is due to join Turkish giants Galatasaray, which will leave the Bundesliga champions a little short on options.
Nico Williams and Jamie Gittens are two names on Bayern Munich’s shortlist. However, both players appear set to join rival outfits on the European stage.
Chelsea and Barcelona will steal Gittens and Williams
It has not been a particularly successful few days for Max Eberl (director of sport) and Christoph Freund (sporting director).
Chelsea and Barcelona have made concrete moves for both Gittens and Williams respectively. Sources close to the clubs have confirmed that the duo are, at this stage, most likely to complete permanent transfers.
The Englishman already has an agreement on personal terms with Enzo Maresca’s men. Barcelona, meanwhile, are convinced that they can register Nico Williams this summer despite their ongoing financial concerns.
Indeed, investment totalling €40m [£34m] from German company Libero Football Finance will be transferred into the club accounts for the 2025/26 season.

Bayern may now target Liverpool wingers Cody Gakpo & Luis Diaz

Quality options available on the market this summer are shrinking, forcing Bayern to turn their gaze to the Premier League.
Liverpool currently possess a wealth of left wing talent that appeals to Max Eberl. In fact, Christian Falk now exclusively reveals to CaughtOffside that Cody Gakpo, in particular, is a ‘personal favourite’ of the Bayern chief.
Luis Diaz is also an admired quantity in the halls of power at Säbener Straße.
“Max Eberl should already be looking for alternative candidates for the wing. Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, for example, could be back on the radar,” the Bundesliga reporter said.
“The player is said to be a personal favourite of Eberl.
“After initial talks with the Gakpo side, there has been no contact with the agents recently. That could now quickly change again. Teammate Luis Diaz also remains a candidate.”
The pair registered 35 goals and 15 assists between them in all competitions last term.
Players | Goals | Assists | Goal contributions per 90 |
Cody Gakpo | 18 | 7 | 107.84 |
Luis Diaz | 17 | 8 | 133.44 |
Kingsley Coman | 9 | 6 | 130.06 |
Serge Gnabry | 7 | 9 | 132.18 |
We can certainly understand why Gakpo, specifically, would appeal to FC Bayern’s recruitment team with a remarkable rate of goal contributions for Arne Slot’s men in 2024/25.
Could the prospect of a regular first-team role intrigue the Dutchman enough to part ways with the Premier League champions? That remains to be seen.
There also remains the potentially awkward question of the asking price. Cody Gakpo has three years left on his current deal (expiring summer 2028) and is a firm favourite of Slot’s.
Liverpool won’t want to push the left winger out the door this summer – not without the player’s wishes and a sizeable transfer fee.
