Bayern Munich end pursuit of Kieran Trippier

Bayern Munich have pulled the plug on their quest to sign Kieran Trippier from Newcastle United.

Trippier was the subject of several bids from Bayern, the latest of which was worth €15 million, and was rejected by Newcastle, who remain keen to hold on to their star man.

Despite reports of the Bundesliga champions reportedly close to calling off their bid for Trippier earlier today, German reporter Florian Plettenberg tipped the Bavarians to go back in with an improved offer.

“Bayern are not in a very good negotiation position because everyone knows they need a right-back and this, as a consequence, drives the price up,” Plettenberg wrote on Sky Sports.

“It’s difficult to say what they would go up to, I’m totally convinced they will improve their offer again – they have no other alternative.”

However, Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund has now confirmed that the club will not pursuing a move for the Englishman any further.

“The topic regarding Trippier has been resolved,” Freund told Sky Germany.

“We only do what we’re 100% convinced of.”

Having failed in their pursuit of Trippier, Bayern will be expected to turn their full attention to Nordi Mukiele but a deal for the Paris Saint-Germain man is also proving difficult due to the financial demands of the French champions.

With just over a week left before the January transfer market ends, Bayern are running out of time to sign a new right-back which has been their major target all-window.

Thomas Tuchel’s side could be forced to keep playing Konrad Laimer in an unnatural position for the remainder of the season, although Noussair Mazaraoui is closing in on a return to action from a calf injury which has seen him miss the last five matches.
