Augsburg bid farewell to Finnbogason and Moravek

By Peter Vice

Bundesliga side FC Augsburg confirmed that the expiring contracts of two team veterans would not be renewed on Tuesday.

After what the club called “extensive discussions” with the new head-coaching regime, FC Augsburg have opted not to tender renewal offers to either striker Alfred Finnbogasson or midfielder Jan Moravek. Both players sat on contracts set to expire at the end of the month.

Finnbogason (33) is actually Augsburg’s leading goal-scorer in the top-flight. The Icelandic forward, in Fuggerstädter colors since 2016, has netted 37 goals for the Bavarian Swabians. He departs the club having made a total of 122 appearances, though nagging injuries limited his use in recent seasons.

“I shall never forget this time,” Finnbogason noted in a farewell statement issued by the club, “After my stints in Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain and Greece, FCA made a home for me. I’m incredibly grateful for that.”

Moravek (32) departs after making 132 appearances over the past ten years. Reflecting on leaving an organization he’s served since 2012, Moravek noted that he had “wistful and teary eyes” after remaining in one place for an entire decade.

“Playing ten years continuously for one club is something very special in this day and age,” the Czech international noted in his statement.

“Making these decisions was anything but easy,” FCA sporting director Stefan Reuter explained in his release,”Jan Morávekand Alfred Finnbogason have played an important part in the fact that we can now enter our twelfth year in a row in the Bundesliga. We thank them for their services on and off the pitch.”
