Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo Preview
Atletico Madrid take on Celta Vigo at the Metropolitano this weekend with Diego Simeone’s side looking to build on a dramatic late win in Europe. Celta have started quite brightly though and are more than capable of making a game of this.
It was an extraordinary ending after a scoreless ninety minutes in Atleti’s Champions League clash against Porto. They took the lead in the 92nd minute, only to give away a penalty and concede moments later. However there was still time for super sub Antoine Griezmann to come off the bench and head home a dramatic 101st minute winner which leaves Atleti well placed to go on and top what is a relatively weak group.
Diego Simeone will hope that those kinds of showings are evidence that some of the old Atleti characteristics are coming back where they never give up and regularly snatch late wins. That wasn’t always evident last season. However there are still some doubts about this Atleti team with this 3-5-2 system not always convincing and you wonder whether they are really going to have enough quality to truly mix it with the very top teams in Spain and Europe this season.
Celta Vigo’s ambitions aren’t quite so lofty but they may just be rethinking what they can achieve this season after a positive start and a really good display last time out. They beat Cadiz 3-0 with Iago Aspas scoring twice but there was also some excellent team football with Oscar Rodriguez’s goal the result of a brilliant move featuring a clever flick from debutant Jørgen Strand Larsen.
The big money signing from Groningen will be expected to compete with Gonçalo Paciência for a starting role this season alongside Aspas in attack. There are plenty of new faces across the team too so Chacho Coudet has plenty to ponder and this is clearly a different kind of game to last week against a poor Cadiz side, although he’ll be reluctant to change too much following an impressive display.

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Celta Vigo
This should be a good game and with Atleti not 100% convincing, Celta certainly look capable of coming here and asking some questions. Overall though, a home win does look more likely with Atleti’s ability to bring on players of the quality of Griezmann perhaps decisive across the course of 90 minutes.
