The powers that be at Atlético Madrid have begun working towards securing the signature of a 2nd member of the first-team setup at La Liga rivals Real Sociedad.
That’s according to Relevo, who have this weekend provided an update on the situation.
Atlético have long wrapped up a deal for a leading figure in La Real’s backline, in the form of Robin Le Normand.
An official announcement regarding the move was, in turn, expected to be forthcoming at some point over the days ahead.
As much, it is understood, has now been delayed, however.
The reason? Atlético’s efforts to include a 2nd member of Imanol’s squad in the operation.
As per Relevo:
‘According to this newspaper, the Madrid club is pushing to try to get the services of Mikel Merino and include him in the transfer from Le Normand.’
To date, Merino has opted against opening negotiations with the capital giants, waiting to see where the interest of the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona leads.
But Atléti are waiting in hope, with Diego Simeone having earmarked former Newcastle United man Merino as the ideal addition to his engine room ranks at the Wanda Metropolitano.
