Aston Villa identify this Rangers defender as a target- The 4th Official

In a recent report, Sky Sports mentioned that Aston Villa have identified Rangers defender Calvin Bassey as a target for the summer transfer window. It has been mentioned that the Villans are eyeing a move for the Nigerian left-back in this off-season.

Bassey’s Impressive Form At The Ibrox Stadium This Season

Bassey had a solid campaign in Scotland as he managed to produce a series of impressive displays on the left side of Rangers’ backline. The 22-year-old did well to pick up six assists in 50 matches for the Scottish club this season across all fronts.

The Aosta-born talent has proven his worth as a solid defender inside his half by averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.2 clearances and 0.8 key passes per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership. He even took care of possession well when distributing the ball from the left flank, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 86.3% in league football (stats via whoscored).

What Will Bassey Add To Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard’s Team?

Bassey can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition attackers. He can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the pitch.

The Nigerian youngster doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when in danger of being caught out at the back. Furthermore, he is a good passer of the ball and can contribute by picking up his fair share of assists in the final third.

Therefore, we can expect Bassey to add more steel and creativity to Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard‘s defensive department at Villa Park. He is good enough to offer some healthy competition for Lucas Digne at the West Midlands club. Plus, the Rangers talent has mostly played at left-back last season but can also fill in as a central defender if needed. Therefore, the Villans should think about sealing a move for Bassey this summer as he will bolster their squad for the long run.
