In a recent report, The Daily Express stated that Arsenal are preparing to move in for Ajax defensive ace Lisandro Martinez this summer. It has been revealed that the Gunners are planning to return with their improved offer for the Argentine centre-back during this summer transfer window.
Martinez’s Impressive Form At The Johan Cruijff ArenA
Martinez managed to impress with his defensive performances for Ajax in the previous campaign as he was responsible for producing a handful of solid performances for them in Dutch football. The 24-year-old found the back of the net once and secured four assists in 36 matches for the Amsterdam giants last season in multiple competitions.
The seven-time Argentina international proved himself to be a dominant defender at the back by averaging 2.0 tackles, 1.9 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per game in the Dutch Eredivisie. He has even been accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates based on his pass success rate of 88.9% in the Dutch top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta Bring Martinez To North London?
Martinez is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. The Argentine sensation usually clears the danger when required and is also proficient at playing his way out from the back. He mainly plays as a centre-half but can even fill in at left-back or assume the duties of a defensive midfielder if his manager needs him to do so.
Someone of Martinez’s skill set and potential will be a welcome addition to Mikel Arteta‘s squad this summer. At 24, his best years are ahead of him which makes him a good option for the Gunners to consider this summer.
We can expect Martinez to bring more bite and steel to Arteta’s defence and could help the North London outfit challenge for major honours in the future. Therefore, the Arsenal boss would be wise to try everything in his power to bring Martinez to the English capital this off-season.
