Early in his NBA career, Anthony Edwards has drawn comparisons to Michael Jordan due to his competitive edge and his relentless scoring ability. It’s quite the honour, considering the Chicago Bulls icon is considered by many to be the greatest basketball player of all time. Thousands of NBA players over the years have grown up idolising Jordan and would love to be compared to him as a result.
Edwards is a little different, though. While he respects MJ and everything he did, he doesn’t consider him to be the greatest player of all time. Instead, he thinks that honour goes to LeBron James. He also grew up idolising a different basketball player and he hasn’t been afraid to acknowledge his favourite player of all time. It’s neither Jordan or James, but is someone else who is currently playing in the association and will be one of his rivals next season.
Edwards Named a Current Rival As His Favourite Player Ever
Following his arrival in the NBA, Edwards has earned a reputation for being unphased by coming up against some of the league’s greatest ever players. He’s faced off against the likes of LeBron, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic, but he’s been unflinching whenever he has.
That doesn’t mean he isn’t capable of being left starstruck, though, and after he teamed with Kevin Durant for Team USA, he couldn’t hide his admiration for the small forward. In quotes shared via Motociclismo, he said:
“It felt good playing alongside KD, who is my favorite player of all time.”
That’s not the only time he’s showered the Houston Rockets star with praise, though. In the past, Edwards described meeting Durant and, as per Yardbarker, stated: “Before I met him, I felt like he was super cool. When I met him, I realized we are the same. All we want to do is hoop… Every time he walks in the gym, he grabs a ball and goes straight to the court… just starts shooting.”
In quotes shared by Fadeaway World, he even explained why he admires Durant so much. The former Golden State Warriors star has been a controversial figure in recent years and has split the opinions of fans online, but Edwards is a big fan and explaining why, he said: “He’s the first seven-footer I’ve seen putting the ball on the floor, scoring off the dribble, so I’ve always been a big fan.”
It’s easy to see why Edwards is such a big fan of Durant. The 36-year-old has been tormenting defenders for nearly two decades. He’s been so dominant, in fact, that LeBron James named him the star most likely to break his record as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
