Andy Robertson becomes Atletico’s key target amid Kerkez arrival speculation

Atletico Madrid have identified Andy Robertson as their top target at left-back this summer, with the Scotland international now facing an uncertain future at Liverpool.

The Spanish side, who have struggled for consistency on the left side of defence, view the 31-year-old as an ideal candidate to strengthen Diego Simeone’s backline.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Atletico rate Robertson higher than AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez, who had previously been considered but was deemed too expensive.

Liverpool’s expected signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth has intensified speculation surrounding Robertson’s role under Arne Slot.

For the first time since arriving at Anfield in 2017, Robertson may no longer be the Reds’ undisputed starter, following a mixed 2024/25 campaign in which he was dropped for key matches.

Despite Liverpool’s official stance that the veteran full-back remains an important player, Atletico believe a deal could be more achievable than Milan’s demands for Hernandez.

Robertson, who has made 342 appearances for the club since joining from Hull City, has just one year left on his contract.

He recently admitted he was considering his long-term plans but insisted that his focus was currently on rest and recovery before pre-season.

“We’ve had good discussions with the club,” he told reporters. “What the future holds, I’m not sure.”

He acknowledged Liverpool’s interest in signing Kerkez and did not dismiss the possibility of a change.

With Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid already confirmed, the possibility of Robertson moving across the Spanish capital to join Atletico would be another high-profile exit from Anfield.

It would also see the two former Liverpool teammates face off in La Liga’s fierce Madrid derby.

Liverpool’s left-back revamp is part of a broader summer overhaul that has already seen them spend heavily on Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.

While Robertson has publicly declared his desire to stay, Atletico’s interest may soon test that resolve.

If an agreement is reached, it could be one of the more surprising transfers of the window.
