Tennis legend Andy Murray had a moment to forget while making his golf debut on Friday. The sport is famous for demanding mental toughness, physical precision, and great patience.
The 38-year-old concluded his tennis career with three Grand Slam titles and 46 career trophies. A five-time finalist at the Australian Open, Murray fell just short of lifting the trophy in Melbourne, but his consistency and resilience allowed him to keep pace with the era’s greats such as Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal. Despite having fewer major titles than his legendary rivals, Murray’s achievements and performances cemented his status as one of the finest players of his generation. He also captured two Olympic gold medals in singles, first on home soil at London 2012 and then again four years later at Rio de Janeiro 2016, becoming the first men’s player to successfully defend an Olympic tennis title.
The former world No. 1 called time on his tennis career after the Paris Olympics last year, marking the end of an era for the Scot. Since stepping away from the court, Murray has shifted his competitive focus to golf. In October 2024, he even claimed his first trophy at the BTJA Mike Dickson Golf Day, giving fans a glimpse of his growing passion for the game. Murray also had a brief stint as the coach of Novak Djokovic this year.
However, the Scot found out just how challenging golf can be when he traded in his racket for a set of clubs at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the DP World Tour. Competing in the event’s pro-am format, Murray was paired with world No. 547 Eddie Pepperell. During the second round on Friday, the three-time Grand Slam winner found himself in a tricky situation.
Andy Murray had Crowd in Stitches After Botched Shot During Golf Debut
After finding the bunker off the tee on the fourth hole, Murray was left with a difficult lie for his recovery. The former Wimbledon champion dug in, took a determined swing, and gave it plenty of effort, but instead of escaping to safety, the ball barely budged, nestling right back into the sand after a fluffed shot. The cameras caught every moment, leaving the 38-year-old visibly embarrassed by his failed escape from the sand.
Murray’s miscue drew laughter from the crowd, who couldn’t help but revel in the lighthearted moment. To his credit, Murray laughed along with them before regrouping for another attempt. Despite the hiccup in the bunker, Pepperell reached the hole in four shots and the duo closed out the second round at 15-under, leaving the duo tied for 28th on the leaderboard.
Murray and Pepperell wrapped up their round with a combined score of eight-under, highlighted by Murray’s three birdies. The former tennis star also showcased his touch earlier in the tournament, carding an eagle during the opening round.
