While all different types of football fans will have their own interpretation of what on-pitch ‘entertainment’ consists of, it’s hard to argue against the prospect of goalscoring, which is believed to be one of the trickiest art forms of the beautiful game.
Irrespective of the level of football, scoring goals is the name of the game. The noise – and optic, for that matter – of the ball caressing or striking the back of the net can exude either jubilation or despair, all depending on what goal it goes in.
And this season, as it draws to a close for all 92 clubs in the English football pyramid, has been packed to the brim with memorable strikes.

English Football Pyramid Explained: How Promotion, Relegation and Cup Competitions Work
The English football pyramid is famous for its depth and history.
As a means of determining how entertaining all of those teams have been throughout, Mail Online have crunched the numbers to determine which teams have experienced the most goals – both scored and conceded – in 2024/25.
92–81
Burnley have conceded the least goals (15) of all 92 teams
Kicking things off as, statistically, the least entertaining team of the 92 is Burnley, who have recently secured promotion back to England’s top flight. Central to their success, however, has been their defensive solidity – they’ve conceded just 15 goals in 44 games. Wigan Athletic and Gillingham are the only other two teams to have accrued a goals per game rate of under two. A conglomerate of teams rub shoulders with them as being some of the least goal-hungry in the country – including Stevenage (2.02) and Millwall (2.07).
Both Colchester and Crewe Alexandra have conceded fewer goals than they’ve managed to score this season – and, as things stand, average 2.14 goals per game. With an average of 2.18 goals per game in 2024/25, Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion – who have experienced a handful of managerial changes – round off the first category. Interestingly, there are no Premier League sides within this category, thus suggesting that the goals flow in during top flight encounters.

Squeezing into this category, with a goals per game rate of 2.18, are the ever-growing Wrexham and Barrow of League Two, while Everton, who are one of six teams not to be relegated from the English top flight, have tended to neither score nor concede many, as evidenced by their rate of 2.24.
Derby County, Charlton Athletic and Tranmere Rovers have all racked up 2.34 goals per game in 2024/25. In fact, the aforementioned trio of sides have experienced 103 goals across 44 league games this campaign.
It’s not to say that these teams aren’t entertaining – but their lack of goals may lack a certain level of excitement. Huddersfield (70th), Stockport County (66th), Bradford City (65th) have all scored more goals than they’ve conceded this season.
Bristol City and Oxford United of the Championship alongside League Two outfit Carlisle United have all experienced 2.41 goals per game in 2024/25. Rounding off the category is Exeter City (in 61st place) have accrued slightly more – 2.43.

There are plenty of Premier League sides in this category – but Rotherham of League One and League Two’s Port Vale have notched 2.45 goals per game this season. Burton Albion, Watford and Northampton Town are all marginally ahead of the duad.
Things in the tumultuous post-Sir Alex Ferguson era for Manchester United have been somewhat bleak – and that’s evidenced by their poor ranking here. In 33 league outings, they’ve scored 38 goals and conceded 46 to chalk up a goals per game rate of 2.55.

As is the case with the previous category, there are a handful of top tier outfit that creep in here too. Arsenal, for example, have scored 61 goals and conceded 27 for good measure – the north Londoners are in 39th after accruing 2.67 goals per game.
Promoted Leeds United are just ahead of the Gunners with 2.68 – which is a tally on par with Middlesbrough and MK Dons. Frank Lampard-managed Coventry City have also encountered plenty of goals this term – 2.70 per match to be precise.
Premier League duo Bournemouth, managed by the Tottenham Hotspur-linked Andoni Iraola, and West Ham United are joint with 2.79 goals per game. The former is helped by their favourable goal difference, while the latter has conceded 18 more goals than they’ve scored.
With greater entertainment value than those two are Fulham (2.82), Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth – who have both witnessed 2.84 goals every game – and Blackpool, who are managed by the legendary Steve Bruce in England’s third tier division.

There are only 18 teams from the 92 that have averaged more than three goals per game this season – and League Two’s Swindon Town kick proceedings off with three on the dot. Norwich City follow with 3.02 goals per game, as do Plymouth Argyle, Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley.
Southampton and Ipswich Town have struggled with the trials and tribulations of the Premier League. Both teams have conceded many more goals than they’ve managed to score themselves – respectively, they’ve totted up 3.09 and 3.15 goals per game.

Ranking the 15 Worst Teams in Premier League History
There have been some truly terrible teams in the Premier League over the years
All of Manchester City, Peterborough, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford – across two of the four English leagues – have accumulated a goals per game rate of 3.21, which is a very, very impressive feat.
Far and away as the most entertaining English side this campaign is Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur. When tuning in to watch the north Londoners, fans never know what to expect thanks to a) their ability to score lots of goals, but also because of b) their increasingly porous nature at the back.
