Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface has been announced as the winner of the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award.
The Nigerian beat RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, Borussia Dortmund left-back Ian Maatsen and Hoffenheim striker Maximilian Beier. To be eligible for the Rookie of the Season award you had to have won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month.
Boniface had won the Rookie of the Month awards for August, September, October and November but missed the majority of the second half of the season due to injury.
In the 23-year-old’s first Bundesliga season, he has 13 goals and eight assists in 22 games. One can only assume the levels he would have reached if he did not get injured and was in and out of the team.
However, this should not take away from Boniface’s contribution as he form in the early stages of the season set Leverkusen up for the position they are in now, which is three games away from a treble of trophies and an unbeaten season.
