‘It was in our minds’ – AS Monaco overcome nerves to break barren home run

The Stade Louis II has not been a lucky hunting ground for AS Monaco in recent times. Without a home win since 3rd December 2023, Les Monégasques hosted Stade Rennais on Sunday, hoping to break their duck.

The barren home run was almost broken against FC Lorient a fortnight earlier and would have been if not for Tiémoué Bakayoko’s last-gasp equaliser. The weight of that run, which stretched back to six games, dating from early December, began to weigh heavy on the shoulders of the Principality club.

Monaco were one goal up and one man up against Rennes at the hour mark on Sunday, however, Thilo Kehrer’s red card then levelled the playing field, leading to a nervy finish. “Of course [the run] was playing in our minds. We really wanted to get the win today,” Maghnes Akliouche, scorer of the only goal of the game, told Get French Football News in the mixed zone post-match.

“When you haven’t won at home in such a long time, you start thinking,” added manager Adi Hütter, who admitted that his side were second best in the second half. However, the Austrian believes that the element of “luck” that was so sorely lacking at previous home games in recent weeks, was on their side against Rennes as Les Monégasques secured a crucial three points that consolidates their place on the Ligue 1 podium.
