Current Serie A champions Napoli are set to retain Alex Meret for one more season.
According to a tweet by Fabrizio Romano, Napoli have activated the clause for a contract extension of Alex Meret. The goalkeeper’s contract with the Partenopei was set to expire at the end of this campaign but now there is a strong possibility that he stays on for one more season.
The current Scudetto holders were able to trigger the clause after providing the 27-year-old with at least 70 per cent of appearances this season.
Renewal negotiations are set to take place in the next few months between the two parties for salary and other details.
With this action, Napoli have completed a strategic move as they will be able to keep Meret for another year or be able to sell him for a transfer fee this summer if they do not reach an agreement. He will not be able to leave as a free agent.
