Liverpool have made a request to Iñaki Ibáñez, the agent of Xabi Alonso, according to Chrisitan Falk.
It’s the first official sign that Liverpool are attempting to convince Alonso to join the Premier League outfit this summer.
Bayer Leverkusen bosses were informed directly of the approach. However, they remain confident that the Spaniard will reject Liverpool’s offer.
Alonso is the preferred candidate to replace the out-going Jürgen Klopp this summer when the German leaves Liverpool.
The 42-year-old is also being courted by Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, who themselves will be on the lookout for a new manager this summer.
Alonso has got B04 playing sensational football this season and is the only team across Europe’s top five leagues not to lose a game in all competitions this campaign.
With 11 games to go, the Spaniard could be on course to bring the Bundesliga title to Leverkusen for the first time.
Alonso is contracted to B04 until 2026.
