Steffen Baumgart wants to resign as 1.FC Köln manager

According to Bild, 1.FC Köln manager Steffen Baumgart is set to resign after the club’s 2-0 loss to Union Berlin as he no longer believes in his ways.

Baumgart’s statement after the loss to Union points toward this: “It’s not about throwing a shotgun in the grain. It’s about the FC and that’s my club. It’s about what’s best for the club.”. Baumgart is not 100% convinced that he can help Köln escape relegation and does not believe in his ideas. The flat cap-wearing manager also feels he can no longer reach European football’s heights like last season in the Conference League.

His relationship with sporting director Christian Keller has also been damaged after a dispute over the potential sale of Dejan Ljubicic in the summer.

Heading into the winter break, Köln currently sit 17th in the Bundesliga having only won two games this whole season against Borussia Mönchengladbach and fellow relegation candidates Darmstadt.

It is looking increasingly likely that Köln will be heading into the new year with a different coach.
