“I disappointed the fans and the team.”

A goal from Serhou Guirassy’s direct replacement proved insufficient for VfB Stuttgart to overcome visiting TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to the Sky microphones afterward, Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Deniz Undav apologized to his hometown fans for a missed penalty early in the match.

Knowing full well that deputizing for injured goal-machine Serhou Guirassy wasn’t going to be easy, Undav admitted he wasn’t satisfied with his performance in his post-match interview with Sky Germany.

“It’s a different feeling when you’re involved from start,” the 27-year-old told his interviewer, “Everyone expects the same from me as Serhou. Unfortunately, I disappointed the fans and the team. That has to improve.”

“One can take many positives out of it,” the goalscorer and provider of an assist continued, “but also a lot of negatives. We built up pressure but didn’t make it happen. We need to focus on possession, defense, and just execute.”
