After signing Niclas Füllkrug from Werder Bremen just before the deadline, Borussia Dortmund were still looking to bring in a centre-back on deadline day.
The Black and Yellows had reportedly agreed personal terms with Southampton’s Armel Bella-Kotchap, but failed to agree a deal to take the former Bochum defender on loan, and he ended up at PSV instead.
After paying €15 million to land Füllkrug, Dortmund couldn’t afford the €3.5 million loan fee for Bella-Kotchap that Southampton were asking for, according to Sky Germany.
According to Bild, Dortmund coach Edin Terzic was the one who pushed for the signing of Füllkrug, as he would rather sign a new striker than a centre-back.
With Nico Schlotterbeck, Niklas Süle and Mats Hummels, the Black and Yellows only have three natural centre-backs in their squad.
