In a recent report, The Daily Mail mentioned that Chelsea have identified Napoli forward Victor Osimhen as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku who is set to return to Inter Milan on loan this summer. It is believed that the Blues are eyeing the Nigerian frontman as one of their targets for this summer transfer window.
Osimhen’s Impressive Form At The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium
Osimhen had a productive campaign in Italian football as he put in a series of productive displays while spearheading the Napoli attack. The 23-year-old scored 18 times and grabbed six assists in 32 appearances for the Italian outfit last season on all fronts.
The Nigeria international performed well to average 3.4 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. However, he needs to improve his ball distribution in the final third after making 70.5% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Osimhen A Good Option For Chelsea?
Osimhen excels at generating space for himself to get a few shots in on-target. He can set up some decent chances for others around him and is proficient at timing his runs well in behind the opponent’s backline.
The Serie A striker can get himself into some dangerous areas in the attacking end of the field. However, as mentioned earlier, the Nigerian sensation has to figure out a way to improve his passing accuracy when under pressure deep inside the opponent’s half.
Osimhen will no doubt add more goals and pace to Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel‘s attacking department. At 23, the Nigerian talent has got his best years ahead of him which makes him a good option for the West London club this summer.
The Napoli star could even help the Blues compete for a few major trophies in the coming seasons. Thus, Tuchel should try everything in his power to bring Osimhen to Stamford Bridge before the end of this summer transfer window as he will be a perfect replacement for Lukaku. However, there are some concerns over whether the Nigerian marksman can maintain his good form in the Premier League where he might struggle to cope with the physicality week in week out.
