Speaking as part of Athletic Club presidential candidate Iñaki Arechabaleta’s presentation on Monday, Marcelo Bielsa compared the Basque team to his former club Leeds United.
“Athletic’s profile is very similar to the team I last managed, Leeds United, Bielsa said.
“Leeds was a team with very good sprinting numbers – the best in Europe – but Athletic was the best in Spain and also one of the best in Europe.”
The Argentine coach also described how his own coaching style has evolved.
“My time at Athletic made me start to think that there were things I had to perfect in order to improve the method of preparing the players,” he added.
Bielsa has been working behind to scenes to prepare for a possible return to San Mamés, where he previously worked between 2011 and 2013.
In addition to watching all 45 of Athletic’s first team games from last season, he has also watched all 38 reserve team games to prepare for what may lie ahead.
If Arechabaleta is elected as the new club president on Friday, Bielsa will return to the club for his second spell.
