Dries Mertens edges close to Napoli contract after taking wage cut

Dries Mertens’ decision to take a wage cut means that he is now close to signing a new deal with Napoli.

It was reported some weeks ago that the Partenopei were close to losing Mertens after contract talks had not worked out. But it seems like a U-turn has been made.

Il Mattino claim that Mertens is now edging close to signing a new Napoli contract and he is ready to take a wage cut of €2 million to do that. The Belgian had initially asked for a wage packet of an assured sum of €2 million plus bonuses of a further €2 million.

But that demand exceeded what Napoli could pay in the new deal, as they are looking to cut costs on wages. But Mertens’ willingness to reduce his demand has been decisive and parties are now close to finding an agreement. He is willing to halve his demands from what they were about a month ago and sign a new deal.
