Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s agent has confirmed that talks have been held with several clubs, indicating a possible transfer this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs interested in signing the Italian shot-stopper with a view to making him a potential long-term successor to Hugo Lloris.
Lloris has been an untouchable figure for the Lilywhites for a decade, registering more than 400 appearances.
However, the 36-year-old has endured mixed fortunes this season, leading France to the finals of the World Cup but has been criticised for his performances at the club level.
Spurs believe it is high time to find an heir to the throne of the French shot-stopper, whose contract expires in the summer of 2024.
Vicario has been one of the best keepers in Serie A this season, producing impressive displays consistently. He has kept seven clean sheets and conceded only 31 goals.
The 26-year-old’s abilities on the ball are as good as his shot-stopping, which makes him one of the sought-after keepers in the market.
Tottenham face a lot of competition for the Azzurri keeper, with many Serie A clubs including AS Roma in dialogue with his entourage.
However, Vicario’s agent Gabrielle Giuffrida has insisted that the transfer race is open and there are also suitors outside Italy.
“For now, there are only preliminary talks, not only with Roma but also with other important Serie A clubs,” Vicario’s agent told Pagine Romaniste (h/t Football Italia).
“It wouldn’t be fair to deny it. Everyone’s interested; we’ve had contacts with the Giallorossi, but this is just a hypothesis for now. Surely he [Vicario] has many admirers.”
“Are clubs outside Serie A also interested? Yes, they are.”
Inter Milan are looking at Vicario as a potential replacement for Andre Onana, who has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea.
Spurs will look to start with a clean slate this summer after a chaotic campaign this season.
Vicario could cost only around €20 million and would be a smart signing for the Lilywhites.
