In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Pete O’Rourke tipped Aston Villa to land Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco. O’Rourke said,
“Carrasco, I think, would be ideal for the Premier League. He’s a great attacking winger, he can score goals, provide goals as well, and he’s played at the highest level for club and country.
“So if he was to leave Atletico Madrid, I’m sure Aston Villa would love to sign him.”
Carrasco’s Up And Down Season In The Spanish Capital
Carrasco proved his worth as a productive presence at times in the final third during the 2021-22 La Liga campaign. However, he has struggled to be consistent in terms of his end product in front of the opposition goal.
The 28-year-old netted six goals and grabbed seven assists in 44 matches for the Madrid outfit last season across all competitions. The 57-time Belgian international has done well to average 1.5 shots, 1.6 key passes and 2.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after completing 80.6% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
What Will Carrasco Add To Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard’s Team?
Carrasco is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the knack for creating some good opportunities for his teammates to score. He can strike the ball purely and with power but needs to be more clinical in the final third.
The 57-time Belgian international would add some goals and creativity to Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard‘s attack. He is good enough to make himself a regular starter at Villa Park in the coming seasons.
Carrasco has won a couple of major trophies during his career, so he would instill a winning mentality in the Villans’ dressing room if Gerrard can find a way to sign him in this off-season. At 28, the Belgian sensation is playing some of his best football at the moment but there are some concerns over whether he would be able to cope with the physical nature and high intensity of Premier League football.
