Schalke extend Lee loan, sell Becker to Holstein Kiel

Schalke 04 have confirmed that Dong-gyeong Lee’s loan has been renewed and that Timo Becker has joined Holstein Kiel permanently.

Dong-gyeong Lee’s loan with Schalke 04 has been extended until the end of 2022, the newly-promoted Bundesliga side have announced today.

‘The Royal Blues’ have secured an option to sign the 24-year-old attacking midfielder on a permanent basis from Ulsan Hyundai.

Lee joined Schalke on loan in January and played just 30 minutes before suffering a metatarsal fracture that kept him out for the rest of the 2021/22 campaign.

“As we were when we first signed him, we are absolutely convinced in Dong-gyeong’s abilities. Having had a setback last season with a broken metatarsal, we’re sure that he’ll be able to show what a brilliant technical player he is from the start of next season,” commented sporting director Rouven Schröder.

“He can play in a wide range of roles and will give us some new attacking impetus in the Bundesliga. We’re delighted that he’ll be staying with us.”

Schalke have also confirmed that Timo Becker has left the club to join Holstein Kiel on a three-year deal.

“The move to Kiel is a good opportunity to get as much match practice as possible. This is something that we couldn’t guarantee him in the Bundesliga. We’re very grateful to Timo for his contribution to Schalke and wish him only the best for the future,” said Schröder.
