Man Utd now ‘hopeful’ of signing 172-goal star at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s rumoured pursuit of Wout Weghorst is “relying” on Burnley and Besiktas reaching an agreement but the Red Devil’s remain “hopeful”, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has told GIVEMESPORT.

Weghorst, who caught the eye for the Netherlands at the recent World Cup, has netted 172 career goals in over 400 senior appearances.

Manchester United transfer news – Wout Weghorst

It wouldn’t be the first time United have gone after a striker well into their thirties. Edinson Cavani and even Cristiano Ronaldo are two examples, but there’s a feeling with Weghorst that things might be different. While still being touted as a stopgap signing, the Dutch international is more than just an extra body up front, with the belief he may be able to contribute to Erik ten Hag’s style of play.

According to Opta (via Sky Sports), no player averaged more presses per 90 minutes than Weghorst in the Premier League last season. Having joined Burnley in the 2021 January window for £12 million, Weghorst was unable to keep the Clarets in the division, netting just two goals in 20 Premier League appearances.

Deciding not to cut their losses, Burnley allowed Weghorst to join Besiktas on loan in the summer, but now United are keen to pry the striker away from Turkey, so that he can join ten Hag’s side. According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, a verbal agreement has been agreed to sign Weghorst, with the Premier League side set to pay €3m to Besiktas.

What has Dharmesh Sheth said about Weghorst to United?

However, with some details still yet to be finalised, Sky Sports reporter Sheth told GMS on Wednesday that the Weghorst to United deal isn’t yet complete.

“United are hopeful, some reports are claiming that verbal agreements have all been agreed,” Sheth told GMS.

“But the information we’re getting is that it’s still relying on Burnley and Besiktas.

“I think United will do all they need to do for it, with regards to Burnley, but the crux of it will come if Burnley and Besiktas can agree.”

What would Weghorst offer United upfront?

As his pressing statistics demonstrate, Weghorst is more than his 6ft 4in frame suggests. A technically gifted forward, Weghorst would be a useful addition to a United attack that has at times lacked invention this season.

No side in the top nine have netted fewer goals than United in the Premier League so far, with ten Hag’s side often reliant on their defensive resilience. As well as offering an outlet upfront, Weghorst would also provide an extra layer of defensive stability, with the striker ranking inside the top 15% for ariels won, tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes compared to fellow forwards, according to Fbref.
