Tottenham Hotspur have a ‘genuine interest’ in Sporting CP defender Pedro Porro, journalist Dean Jones has informed GiveMeSport.
Spurs currently have three options at right wing-back within their first-team squad, but none have impressed under the tutelage of manager Antonio Conte.
Tottenham Hotspur transfer news – Pedro Porro
Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã (via Sport Witness) claim that Tottenham’s director of football Fabio Paratici is now ‘preparing to formalise’ a bid for Porro with the winter transfer window fast approaching.
The offer is expected to total the Spain international’s minimum fee release clause, which is currently set at €45 million (£38.7m).
It’s also claimed that Spurs’ interest in Porro is ‘making people talk’ in Portugal, not least because Manchester City, the side who sold him to Sporting over the summer, are said to possess a 30% sell-on clause.
However, Tottenham reportedly want to use former winger Marcus Edwards as a pawn in negotiations to whittle down Porro’s price tag, with the former’s sell-on clause proving crucial.
When Sporting signed the 24-year-old from the capital club, they were promised 50% of a future sale, yet Paratici and co are now supposedly willing to forego that agreement for a discount on Porro.
What has Jones said about Porro?
Conte currently has Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and summer signing Djed Spence to call upon on the right-hand-side of defence.

Yet the Italian tactician only appears to trust Royal, and Jones has told GMS that he believes it would ‘make sense’ for Tottenham to sign Porro.
He said: “I think it is a genuine interest, and his style of play would make sense in in the setup of Tottenham. It’s unclear as to whether it can actually happen right now.”
How do Porro and Emerson Royal compare?
Royal, 23, has established himself as the first-choice right wing-back this season, yet has only managed one assist and no goals in 18 appearances.
Meanwhile, Porro, who is one year Royal’s junior, has racked up one goal and nine assists in 20 appearances while also putting up some impressive underlying numbers defensively, leading to him being labelled “special”.
As per FBref, the 5 foot 8 ace has won 1.63 tackles while making 0.98 blocks and 0.89 interceptions per 90 minutes this season across all competitions.
Porro has outperformed Royal’s tallies of 1.33, 0.91, and 0.77 respectively, indicating that he would improve Tottenham at both ends of the pitch.
