Huesca vs Sporting Gijon Preview

The Segunda Division hits matchday 17 this weekend and playing on Friday gives both Huesca and Sporting Gijon the chance to climb several places in the top half. Just one point separates the sides as it stands with Huesca in 9th on 23 points while Sporting are 11th on 22.
Both are within touching distance of the play-offs in what is shaping up to be another really tight race for the top six. Huesca’s strong record at El Alcoraz has provided the foundations for their challenge. They’ve won their last two home games 1-0 including a victory over high-flying Las Palmas and have lost just once on the ground so far this season.
That will make them the favourites here although they do come into this game following a poor showing last time out. They were beaten 2-0 away at Tenerife, a rare occasion where they didn’t look that solid defensively. They’d only let in 10 goals in 15 league games this term prior to that, although they are also one of the lowest scoring sides with José Ángel Ziganda’s team not known for playing particularly great exciting football.
Things have been a little bit more eventful over in Gijon. Sporting have blown hot and cold a bit this term but have found a bit more consistency of late, albeit with three straight draws leading into this one. It finished 2-2 at home to Leganes last time out with the Madrid club snatching a point after the break through Jose Arnaiz.
They haven’t been particularly happy travellers this term with just 1 win on the road in the league. Less than 30% of the goals they’ve scored have come away and they’ve not always looked convincing at the back with a recent 5-0 defeat at Granada their most alarming result.

Score Prediction: Huesca 1-0 Sporting Gijon
Huesca look the more likely winners here. They are tough to break down and boast a strong home record and look capable of extending Sporting’s winless streak to 6 league outings.
