Arsenal ‘could make January move for 55-goal star happen’ at the Emirates

Arsenal could lure PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo to the Emirates Stadium in January after they chose against strengthening their interest in the summer, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Although Gunners boss Mikel Arteta spent close to £120million during the most recent transfer window, it seems he has set his sights on bolstering his attacking options at the turn of the year.

What’s the latest news involving Gakpo?

According to The Athletic, Arsenal are among a number of clubs pushing to sign Gakpo and PSV are open to offloading their talisman if a suitable offer arrives in January.

The report suggests the nine-cap Netherlands international is not interested in a move to Leeds United, although the Yorkshire side came close to reaching an agreement with his current employers a matter of weeks ago, while Real Madrid and Manchester United have also been linked.

AC Milan are reportedly tracking Gakpo’s progress as well, although they are mindful of the fact his price tag could increase considerably by performing well at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

It was revealed in August that PSV’s valuation of the winger stood at £38.4million, while Southampton failed with a proposal worth £21.4million.

Although they have already been knocked back in their efforts to acquire Gakpo, it is understood that Leeds are planning to push for his signature at the turn of the year after he has been identified as the club’s top target.

What has Paul Brown said about Gakpo?

Brown believes Arsenal could have won the race for Gakpo’s signature during the summer transfer window if they had headed to the negotiating table.

But the journalist still feels a move to the capital may be on the cards in the coming months as the Gunners will be able to meet PSV’s demands.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: “Arsenal were certainly capable of signing him in the summer if they wanted to, but they didn’t really pursue it.

“I don’t think it would be one that would be prohibitive in terms of price for them so, if they really wanted him, I think they could make it happen in January.”

How does Gakpo compare to Gabriel Martinelli?

Gakpo has found the back of the net 55 times and notched a further 44 assists during his stint with Eredivisie giants PSV, which emphasises his prowess in the final third of the pitch.

Most of his 153 appearances have come on the left wing and Martinelli has occupied that role regularly for Arsenal, racking up 37 goal contributions along the way.

Statistics show Gakpo has averaged a significantly higher number of goals and assists per 90 minutes than the Gunners star during the early stages of the season, while he has also recorded more shots.

With that being the case, the Dutchman could certainly be viewed as an upgrade on three-cap Brazil international Martinelli.
