Lewis Hamilton has revealed the nature of crunch talks between him and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc following the controversy at the Mexican Grand Prix.
Hamilton and Leclerc clashed at last weekend’s race in Mexico City following the incident in which saw Max Verstappen take advantage of the opening lap Ferrari squabble to win the Mexican Grand Prix.
The Ferrari duo came together in the opening lap of the race after the Monégasque attempted to overtake his teammate, effectively handing Verstappen the win in the process.
Leclerc’s move angered Hamilton, who made his feelings known on the team radio.
Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur pulled no punches when speaking about the collision, claiming they ‘lacked respect for the brand’.
Lewis Hamilton Reveals Details of Meeting Between Charles Leclerc and Fred Vasseur
Hamilton and Leclerc held talks with Vasseur in Brazil on Thursday ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix following their contentious incident at the Mexican Grand Prix.
But the 41-year-old Brit claimed that Vasseur hasn’t ‘cleared the air’, though claims he has ‘squashed it’ between him and Leclerc.
“Fred [Vasseur] hasn’t cleared the air in the sense of like me and Charles,” he said on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s race in São Paulo.
“We [Lewis and Charles] sat and spoke, and we squashed it, and we’re moving on. I think we still have a huge amount of respect for each other, and I’m glad we had a chat, and now we move on.”
Hamilton, who will start at the back of the grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix due to a power unit change, added: “We’ve been getting along just fine as normal. So, sometimes in those scenarios, it just takes having a conversation, and there’s been no demands from either side.
“It’s just been giving our points and areas that we can do better and support each other.
“The guy’s 28 years old, so I don’t think it’s an age thing. I think it’s a mentality thing. It’s like ‘do or die. Like either I win or none of us do’. and it shouldn’t be that.”
What Did Charles Leclerc Say?
Leclerc said the issues have also been resolved with Hamilton following their meeting with Vasseur.
“It was really good to discuss all together,” said Leclerc, who, like Hamilton, has also been hit with a grid penalty as he will start from P14 for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The 29-year-old, who welcomed the birth of his first child earlier this week, continued: “Obviously, for me, it’s been a bit of a crazy week, and positively, because I became a father for the first time, so we didn’t necessarily have time to discuss.
“I think discussing whatever is left, or whatever frustration is left, was needed. Now I feel it’s fully settled, and I don’t think we should be speaking about it too much going forward.”
