Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca agrees Sporting CP move

Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca and Sporting CP have reached an agreement for the Portuguese head coach to takeover at the Lisbon-based club, according to Foot Mercato. Reports in both France and Portugal stated that Fonseca is Sporting CP’s primary target to replace Rui Borges after the latter endured a spell of disappointing results. The outlet understands that Sporting CP still need to negotiate Rui Borges’ contract termination before announcing Fonseca’s arrival. Sporting CP hope to have secured Fonseca’s signing in time for the team’s UEFA Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Foot Mercato adds that Sporting CP are yet to strike a deal with Lyon over Fonseca’s exit terms, but the Portuguese giants are reportedly confident to get a deal done. It should be straightforward given that Fonseca’s Lyon contract expires in 2027. In the wake of Lyon’s 2-0 home win against Angers on Sunday, Fonseca said he didn’t know whether he’ll finish the season in France. As for his potential replacement, L’Equipe reported that former Juventus manager Thiago Motta was the standout option.
