Liverpool got the better of high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds went into the match four points behind the Seagulls, who started the day in third following a mightily impressive start to the season.
There were suggestions that the match was at threat of being called off due to bad weather, but the game went ahead as planned. Despite their inconsistent form to start the campaign, it was Andoni Iraola’s side that came away from the match with all three points.
Liverpool raced out of the blocks and took a two-goal lead after 21 minutes thanks to goals from Pascal Gross (own-goal) and Alexander Isak.
Brighton did all they could to get back in the game, but they could not find a way past Alisson Becker as Liverpool emerged 2-0 victors.
Hurzeler was not impressed with what he saw from Liverpool. Speaking after the match, he took a dig at the Reds’ tactics, saying that ‘there was only one team trying to create and win the game.’ He said, per ESPN:
“I think everyone in the stadium saw that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game and therefore I have to praise my players.
“I think everyone in the stadium, and you as well, felt there was a missed opportunity for us, because it’s not only after the goal or the goals they scored.
“Also, before they scored, we had one, two big chances and today I think it was just the difference that they scored, we didn’t score. They kept a clean sheet because they defended well with their centre-backs, with full-back [Ronald] Araujo and with [Milos] Kerkez.
“I think they blocked a lot of shots. They really defended the box well. We didn’t have that efficiency. We couldn’t keep the clean sheet because we made easy mistakes, we lost some important personal duels.
“But overall I saw a team with a lot of good things to take away. I saw a team that really had the belief in our approach, that stuck to the match plan, that always kept going, and that is very frustrating because we all have the feeling that there is a missed opportunity here today.”

His comments haven’t gone down well. One fan said on Reddit: “The chance creation was pretty equal? Brighton had 5 more shots, .12 more xg, 1 big chance missed but 4 fewer shots on target than Liverpool (4 to 1). Baffling quote.”
Another said on X: “Surely not… That can’t be a real quote.” A third wrote: “This guy is a sore loser. Never gives respect to his opponents.”
A fourth commented: “He really is the worst loser I’ve ever seen. Just have some humility for once. No class,” while a fifth stated: “Its unbelievable he thought this. This is beyond being a sore loser.”
