Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Matchday 8, 25/10/2026
Having lost to Lorient last week (1-0), AS Monaco snatched a draw against a Lille side that had initially been in control but were then reduced to 10 men. Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais will have the chance tomorrow to take top spot in the table.
The match
It took a while before one of the 22 players in this top-of-the-table clash finally managed to find the target. 24 minutes, to be precise. But it was worth the wait, as Ethan Mbappé, perfectly picked out by Soriba Diaoune, made no mistake in beating Lukáš Hrádecký with a precise shot (0-1).
The opening goal… and that was it. For anyone hoping to see a flurry of chances, the Stade Louis II did not – at first glance – seem like the ideal venue. That said, the few thousand spectators packed into the stands at Monaco’s home ground on Sunday were nevertheless treated to a fast-paced match after half-time. Another fixture that Ansu Fati was once again forced to leave, having picked up an injury to the back of his thigh after 14 minutes of play.
Whilst the first half may have disappointed some, the second, however, got off to a completely different start. Right from the outset, Aleksandr Golovin forced Berke Özer – who had been untroubled up to that point – into a save (47th). Having reorganised tactically, Filipe Luis’s men looked much more intense. Golovin thought he’d been awarded a penalty (55th), then Brunner came close to score the equaliser (65th). But it was in the 66th minute that the real turning point of the match finally came, when Tanguy Nianzou, after committing a heavy foul on Brunner, was sent off by the referee.
Forced to defend even more, Lille were pushed back. And what seemed inevitable proved to be just that. From a tricky ball that Brunner thought he had touched, Edan Diop, who had come on at half-time, beat Özer (1-1, 74th) to level the score. In the final quarter of an hour, Golovin (79th), Matthis Abline (90th+2) and Vanderson (90th+5) once again kept the Turkish goalkeeper on his toes, but were unable to beat him.

The Senegalese midfielder was far less influential than usual, but put in a better second-half performance than the first. Although he was responsible for the turnover that led to Lille’s opening goal, he managed to raise his game to help his team get back into the match.

The Lille captain proved invaluable in defence, but also in pressing the opposition high up the pitch. Despite showing a level of aggression that could and should have earned him a booking, André shone in coming to his team’s rescue during the tense moments.
Ethan Mbappé – 6
