Julian Alvarez has parted ways with long-time agent Fernando Hidalgo after his failed attempt to join Barcelona. The Atletico Madrid is striker now close to signing with a new representative.
The Argentina international has received several proposals since ending his professional relationship with Hidalgo. However, Mundo Deportivo says he has chosen Pablo Barquero.
Barquero represents Barcelona midfielder Rodri. He has reportedly won over Alvarez and his family. An agreement should be formalised soon.
The 26-year-old appreciates Barquero’s experience and discreet approach. He believes the agent can provide the right guidance for the next stage of his career.
Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore, who advises Alvarez’s close friend Enzo Fernandez, was also considered.
Jorge Mendes, one of football’s most influential agents, also explored bringing the Atletico forward into his client portfolio.
However, Barquero appears to have moved ahead of the competition and could soon take charge of Alvarez’s professional affairs.
The potential appointment is interesting given his connection to Barcelona, the club Alvarez dreams of joining.
Barquero was involved in Rodri’s move to the Catalan giants this summer and might be required to engineer a similar transfer for Alvarez.
Alvarez’s desire to leave Atletico for Barcelona was a major talking point during the summer transfer window.
He pushed hard to join the Spanish champions, but Atletico Madrid would not budge. The switch ultimately failed to materialise, leaving the striker facing an uncertain future.
The breakdown of the transfer reportedly took a significant toll on Alvarez professionally and personally. The way the situation was handled contributed to his decision to dismiss Hidalgo.
Finding a new representative is really key for the former Manchester City forward as he looks towards the next phase of his career.
A change of agent does not guarantee he will push to leave Atletico again.
Still, Barquero’s Barcelona connections are likely an ominous sign for the Madrid-based club that he still has his sights set on a move to the La Liga table-toppers.
