Premier League Bosses Discuss Suspending Man City After Win vs Liverpool

Manchester City’s ongoing legal battle with the Premier League remains the biggest talking point in world football after the Citizens’ win against Liverpool.

Enzo Maresca’s men strolled into a hotbed of anger and passion when they travelled to Anfield on Sunday afternoon. However, City continued their 100% record in the league thanks to Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki’s goals against 10 men.

It wasn’t just the Anfield faithful making their feelings about the Citizens clear during their first game since being found guilty of 114 financial breaches.

Piers Morgan was one of the most recognisable names to speak out against the ‘farce’ he felt he was seeing at Anfield. The British journalist and TV personality was one of many to slam the fact that it’s business as usual for City.

He tweeted: “Sorry, but this is a total farce. Manchester City players, and fans, celebrating wildly like nothing has happened – despite the club being exposed as the worst cheats in football history. What happens if they win the title again this season? That could ruin the Premier League.”

That notion is reported to have extended to some senior figures in the Premier League itself. According to the Independent, executives have already been messaging each other about whether they should suspend the club immediately, or whether a vote should be held.

One reportedly argued: “This is a farce that will lead to protest, damage to the integrity and reputation of the competition, and possibly even violence. The board has a duty at law to its shareholders to protect, enhance and promote the interests of the Premier League.”

Rule B6 states that 15 clubs can, in theory, vote to expel the Citizens from the league. However, it is extremely unlikely this will be the action taken.

City have appealed the guilty verdict and would be expected to take the case to the High Court if they were expelled and get reinstated. But the message from within the Premier League appears to be that, ‘It’s clearly that urgent.’

While it’s a waiting game to hear the outcome of the appeal, there has already been a lot of speculation regarding possible sanctions if the guilty verdict sticks. City could face large fines, a transfer ban, points deductions and even the stripping of titles.

TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil claimed to have the inside scoop last week. The ex-Scotland international suggested he’d been told that a 60-point deduction would be imposed. He said:

“I’m hearing a 60-point deduction, which will please people and still give City a chance of surviving.

“I don’t know whether it’s this season. I can’t see how that can be this season because of the timing, when they get it through it’ll be too late. “Is it next season? But they are talking about a 60-point deduction.”
