When Ronaldo Scored One of The Best Solo Goals of All Time For Barcelona

On October 12, 1996, a 20-year-old Ronaldo picked up the ball just inside his own half and produced one of football’s most replayed moments.

Barcelona were already 2-0 up against SD Compostela when Ronaldo added to the tally with his moment of magic.

A full-length dribble past a cluster of defenders and a cool finish has been dissected and nearly compared to every great solo goal since.

Thirty years on, it remains the signature image of Ronaldo’s brief spell in Catalonia, in which he scored 47 goals in 51 appearances before a move to Inter Milan.

This is the story of the goal itself, the reactions it produced, and the surprising regret Ronaldo has voiced about it decades later.

Ronaldo collected the ball just inside his own half and shrugged off a trip and a shirt-pull before bursting past two defenders.

As he closed in on the box, his speed and power made it too risky for Compostela’s defenders to commit to a tackle without conceding a penalty.

He didn’t need a foul to be won for him, he cut inside and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper without thinking twice.

What made the goal so startling wasn’t just the distance covered, but the manner in which he did it. It was a full sprint, yet he was so in control of the ball, all whilst shrugging off three defenders before calmly slotting it under the keeper.

Teammates had their heads in their hands from complete shock, whilst manager Sir Bobby Robson was the same, and fans of both clubs were up on their feet applauding Ronaldo.

According to Forbes, Compostela goalkeeper Fernando later said, “Not once did I think he would get to me. There were many meters and companions of mine ahead of him to overcome, but he did everything he had to do and succeeded.

“He practically dribbled the entire team, and when he reached the penalty spot, he still had the ability to put the ball inside the post. It was a demonstration of skill, technique and power.”

Robson later told FourFourTwo, “I once saw Ronaldo score a goal for Barça where he beat five or six players. Diego Maradona at his best was the best I ever saw. Ronaldo would be a close second, though.”

Teammate at the time, Abelardo, said: “Honestly, that goal was a disgrace. You can see Robson putting his hands on his head in disbelief after Ronaldo scored, but we all did.

“I remember looking around, and everyone was in the same pose. The best I’ve seen, totally unrepeatable by nearly any footballer alive.”

However, the story later takes an unprecedented turn. Two decades later, with the benefit of hindsight and a career that saw him end up in Madrid, Ronaldo revisited the goal with regret. Speaking to Movistar, “It was a lovely goal, but the truth is I would have preferred to score it with Real Madrid. The only pity is that I was not at Madrid when I scored it.”

It’s a strong admission from a player who spent just one season at Nou Camp, after an ugly contract dispute saw the Brazilian take his career to Italy, before joining Real Madrid later on. Rightfully so, the comment has never been the most comfortable for Barcelona fans, who believe the goal is inseparable from their identity during that era.
