Atlético Madrid and Barcelona are closing in on a deal that will see Antoine Griezmann join Los Colchoneros permanently without the club having to pay €40m, report Mundo Deportivo.
According to the agreement signed in the summer of 2021, Atlético Madrid would be obliged to pay €40m to Barcelona if the Frenchman plays at least 50% of the minutes he is available for during this season.
However, Los Colchoneros are not keen on paying the fee and Diego Simeone has only been bringing on Griezmann for the final 30 minutes of Atlético Madrid’s games to avoid activating this clause.
The 31-year-old has expressed his desire to continue playing at the Estadio Metropolitano and the Balugrana do not want the player back at the Camp Nou either.
It is believed that two sides are close to reaching an agreement that will see Griezmann’s fee being reduced to €20m from €40m. Both clubs are keen to finalise the deal before the start of the World Cup.
