Aston Villa may be waving goodbye to their long-serving star Emiliano Martinez in the coming weeks of the transfer window, according to reports – with his agent being ‘spotted’ in Milan after reports emerged that Martinez would be on his way out of Villa Park.
Martinez has been Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper since his move from Arsenal in 2020, after he’d helped the Gunners win the FA Cup, and he’s been a huge part of the meteoric Villa rise from relegation battlers to Champions League regulars.
But that could come to an end soon, with reports suggesting that his agent met up for talks with Inter over a potential deal.
Di Marzio: Martinez Reps ‘Meet’ With Inter Chiefs for Talks
The report from Gianluca Di Marzio states that Martinez remains on Inter’s shortlist for a new goalkeeper, once Yann Sommer’s contract runs out in the summer, having turned 37 years of age.
Inter are working on finding his replacement, and it’s thought that the Nerazzurri’s transfer chiefs met with Martinez’s agent on Wednesday, reiterating that the ‘world-class’ is a possibility to come into their goalkeeping ranks.
Martinez’s agent, who is also his brother, was spotted in Milan which sparked rumours of a move for the Argentina star to the Serie A league leaders and Champions League finalists.
Inter will not go beyond a weekly salary of £66,000 to tempt the World Cup winner to the San Siro, excluding bonuses, which may not help Martinez’s case but given he’s got another three years left on his deal, Villa could accept a deal to shift him on for the long-term look on their financial books.
It would leave them in a position where they’d have to replace the Argentine star, with only fellow veteran Dutch star Marco Bizot as their other senior goalkeeper, and with his 200th Premier League appearance for Villa set to come over the weekend, he will leave as nothing short of a superstar if he does depart.
Martinez Exit Could be Villa’s Blessing in Disguise
Martinez has been an incredible servant for Villa, but given that he’ll be turning 34 at the start of next season, this may even be a solid opportunity for Villa to get some money in for their first-team stopper and plan for the future.
The likes of James Trafford and Diogo Costa have both been touted for a move to the west Midlands in recent days as speculation hots up.
However, it remains to be seen if the former will be allowed to leave Manchester City and if the latter would be keen on a move to Villa having been linked elsewhere in previous years.
