Sir Jim Ratcliffe has a big job on his hands to replace Ruben Amorim as Manchester United manager.
The United owner made the decision to sack Amorim at Old Trafford earlier this week, following comments by the Portuguese that he was at Old Trafford to be the “manager not the head coach”.
Amorim’s position at the club became untenable as a result and, with United struggling for form in the Premier League, the decision was made to relieve him of his duties.
It looks as if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to be the man to take caretaker charge, with a face-to-face meeting due to take place over the last few days.
But who will be the permanent manager when it comes to the summer? GIVEMESPORT takes a look at the contenders.
Thomas Tuchel After the World Cup
Thomas Tuchel has the task of guiding England at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico this summer. But what happens to the Three Lions boss after the tournament ends?
His contract with the Football Association was for 18 months when he signed it in October 2024, meaning it only runs until the World Cup comes to its conclusion.
If Manchester United are looking to bring in a caretaker manager between now and the end of the season and then appoint a permanent manager in the summer, Tuchel could be the best – and cheapest option, with the Hard Tackle saying he is their top managerial target.
Oliver Glasner Destined for Bigger Things
Tuchel is not the only option who will be available for free this summer. There is another boss currently in position who United have been linked with this summer.
Oliver Glasner’s contract at Selhurst Park is up at the end of the 2025/26 season and he has spoken openly in recent weeks and months about how he feels about the transfer policy behind the scenes at the Eagles.
If he is angling for a move away, Old Trafford could be the perfect destination, with United officials reportedly looking closely at the Palace boss and CaughtOffside stating he is one of the frontrunners for the role.
An Appointment Out Of Left-Field
According to Football Insider, Manchester United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is pushing for United to move for Julian Nagelsmann in the summer.
Like Tuchel, Nagelsmann has a big job this summer – guiding Germany at the 2026 World Cup. What happens after that, however, is anyone’s guess.
Vivell is understood to be a big fan of Nagelsmann and is pushing behind the scenes for United to appoint the former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich boss at Old Trafford.
Caretaker Manager To Remain In Place
The fourth real option is for the caretaker manager to get the gig on a full-time basis.
Either Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick look set to be named the caretaker manager at Old Trafford after face-to-face talks with the club this week.
Solskjaer took over as caretaker boss after Jose Mourinho was sacked in 2018 and did such a good job and the players liked him so much that he was given the role on a full-time basis, staying until 2021.
There is every possibility that happens again, with a number of players behind his re-appointment.
