HSV start the new year away at Freiburg as they hope to get a breather from the relegation zone. The hosts have been excellent in the Europa League, while their Bundesliga record in the Hinrunde was identical (5W-5D-5L).
Damion Downs starts for the visitors on his debut after HSV beat fierce rivals Werder Bremen for his signing. Philipp Treu will play as a winger for Freiburg instead of his main role in defense.
