Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid closed the gap between themselves and table-topping Barcelona to one point following a 2-0 win over Sevilla but Vinicius Jr has been slammed as ‘pathetic’ by Los Blancos supporters for his response to being whistled at by the match-going fans.
After a tricky period for the capital club, midfielder Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for Alonso’s men at the Santiago Bernabeu inside 38 minutes: the Englishman leaped the highest in the Sevilla box to nod his glancing header into the back of the net and beyond Sevilla’s Odysseas Vlachodimos.
None other than Kylian Mbappe doubled their lead with four minutes left of regulation time on the clock. Notching his 28th strike of the campaign across all competitions, the Frenchman was as cool and collected from 12 yards out as you’d expect from one of the deadliest frontmen on the planet.
Things Threaten To Turn Ugly as Vinicius Jr Whistled Off The Pitch in Madrid 2-0 Sevilla
Amid a smattering of cheers, the majority of the supporters in the home end could be heard whistling in the direction of the Brazilian winger, who has struggled to strike a decent working relationship with Alonso since the Spanish boss replaced Carlo Ancelotti in the summer, upon him being substituted off.
While plaudits should’ve flown the way of the team given they managed to keep pace with their rivals at the summit of La Liga, all attention was on Vinicius and the deafening whistles around the stadium as he made way for youngster Gonzalo Garcia in the 83rd minute of play.
The applause was scattered with small groups of supporters showing gratitude – but the common theme around Los Blancos’ state-of-the-art venue was disappointment.
Shortly after the final whistle, Vinicius – who is, and rightfully so, widely regarded as one of the best wingers in football – made a notable change to his social media, which many believe is in direct response to the whistling heard from the home contingent during Saturday’s Spanish top flight encounter.
He’s replaced his Instagram profile picture, previously of him holding a Real Madrid shirt, with a picture of him representing Brazil.
Vinicius, who has plundered 201 goal contributions (111 goals and 91 assists) in 345 outings for his La Liga employers, also recapped the night on home soil with two pictures – one of him in action, while the other is a picture of him in the zone ahead of kick-off. The post, which can be seen below, was accompanied only by an ellipsis.
“The fans are free to express themselves,” Alonso said about fan unrest following their 2-0 victory on home soil, per Bolavip, before adding that resting up ahead of their next match is now important. “It was a complicated match, but I value where the team is, considering the absences, and now we rest.”
Should things go from bad to worse, Vinicius will have no shortage of suitors across Europe. Manchester United, at the back end of November, had reportedly made contact with the unsettled wide man and Chelsea have also been named as ‘frontrunners’ in the race for the Brazil international’s signature.
Alonso Speaks Out, Fans Slam Vinicius’ Post-Match Reaction
Any sort of post-match celebrations were, however, hampered by the continuation of Vinicius’ relationship with the club – its fans, the powers that be and the manager – breaking down before our eyes and fans are unhappy with the 25-year-old. “He’s so immature. It’ll cost him everything,” one said, as another added: “Honestly? I’m done with him! What pathetic behaviour!”
“Vinicius isn’t helping himself here. Almost the whole of Spain hates him,” a third Madrid supporter wrote. “Madrid fans are the only ones who defend him. But if he starts a beef with Madrid fans, he’ll certainly have no one to defend him.
“Although he has some virtual die hard fans but the match going fans will stop defending him. He’s one of the captains, he should be more sensible. He’s a veteran in this team not a youngster anymore. Anyway, I hope he gets back to his level.”
Real Madrid Have Now ‘Decided to Sell Vinicius Junior’ – Here’s Why
The Brazilian international is losing his star power following a series of public fallouts at Real Madrid
“This guy is very immature when dealing with fans. No offence, but guys like him should never be made captain at Real Madrid,” another member of the Santiago Bernabeu faithful wrote after the realisation that he had changed his Instagram details. Another said: “He’s so immature. It’ll cost him everything.”
“He has to stop this childish nonsense. The fans whistled you rightfully because you haven’t been at your level for a long time. If you want to respond, go ahead and do it on the pitch not on Instagram like an influencer,” one added before a final fan wrote: “This guy is so dramatic sometimes.”
