Leeds Must Appoint Brendan Rodgers to Replace Daniel Farke, Not Gary O’Neil

Leeds United are very much in a relegation battle, and the 49ers are surely considering if any changes are needed.

Manager Daniel Farke is in his third season at Elland Road, having achieved a record-breaking campaign in his first only to miss out on automatic promotion and then lose the playoff final against Southampton.

But a fantastic second season saw the Whites move up to the Premier League after a 100-point season, and they also started their return to the top-flight well. However, form has fallen off a cliff in recent weeks, and Leeds have lost their last four in a row since defeating West Ham, while they have lost six of their last seven.

That has led to major concerns over whether the manager is up to the job of keeping the club in the Premier League after a mega-spend during the transfer window, where Farke splashed in excess of £100m to bring in ten new faces.

Gary O’Neil Emerges as Leading Candidate

Gary O'Neil

After leaving Wolves 12 months ago, Gary O’Neil was on the verge of a return to the Molineux last month. The London-born boss revealed that he opted to turn the move down ultimately, as it wasn’t the right time for him to return.

But the manager, described as ‘outstanding’, is looking for a new role and a move to Elland Road could be seen as ideal for him. O’Neil is highly regarded as a young manager, and has also been linked with a move to Southampton too.

Leeds are likely to be looking for someone with Premier League experience who could help the squad to be stronger defensively and also more efficient going forward. O’Neil could well be the man to make that step and help them, especially considering the impact he made when he first joined Wolves last season as they were battling relegation.

However, Leeds are a massive club and there is too much riding on them going down. They need someone who is better than average tactically, and also able to potentially use his network of connections to strengthen the squad.

Leeds Must Appoint Brendan Rodgers Instead

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reacts

After leaving Celtic earlier this season following clear issues with the board behind the scenes, the FA Cup-winning boss is a free agent.

Rodgers is known for playing possession-heavy football with his teams scoring a lot of goals, while the former Liverpool boss also has great experience managing at the highest level in the Premier League and Champions League.

The Whites are said to be considering Rodgers as one of their top targets for the job should they decide to part ways with Farke, and it would quite obviously be the best possible option for them. He is an ‘elite’ manager who has all the capabilities of improving Leeds in the short-term.

With Leeds taking on Chelsea on Wednesday night, they could well fall to five consecutive defeats, and the team is already in the relegation zone. A decision will need to be made very soon by the 49ers, and Rodgers won’t be waiting forever. It’s surely now or never.
