On transfer deadline day, Augsburg have announced their fourth highest record signing in the form of Fabian Rieder from Stade Rennes for a reported €7m, behind only Tomas Koubek (€7.5m), Martin Hinteregger (€10.5m) and Ricardo Pepi (€16.4m).
Rieder – who spent last season on loan at VfB Stuttgart – has signed a five-year deal.
“In Fabian, we’ve managed to sign an internationally experienced and sought-after player for Augsburg. He has impressive vision and a great left foot. He’s also got a lot of stamina and embodies the character that we want to see on the pitch,” said FCA Sporting Director Benni Webster.
Rieder added: “The talks with the board and the head coach [Sandro Wagner] were great, so it didn’t take long for me to get excited by the idea of moving to Augsburg. I think that FCA will provide the optimal conditions for my sporting and personal development. I’m really looking forward to the coming years and playing in my first home game at the WWK Arena.”
After bringing in €13m, Augsburg have spent €24m (-€11m net) this summer, but have made some astute signings in Elias Saad and Han-Noah Massengo while Chrislain Matsima and Cedric Zesiger joined the club on a permanent basis.
