Graham Potter alternative has ‘always wanted’ Stamford Bridge job

Chelsea would not need to convince Brendan Rodgers to swap Leicester City for west London as he ‘has always wanted’ the Stamford Bridge job, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Blues’ search for a new manager is underway after Thomas Tuchel was sacked on Wednesday morning.

What’s the latest news involving Rodgers?

With Leicester bottom of the Premier League table and still looking for their first domestic win of the season, Rodgers is under increasing pressure at the King Power Stadium.

It is understood that the 49-year-old will be paid a minimum of £10million in compensation if the Foxes were to show him the door.

However, Rodgers has previously enjoyed success with his current employers as he led them to their first-ever FA Cup triumph and Community Shield glory.

He also won the Scottish Premiership title twice during a trophy-laden spell in the Celtic dugout, while clinching the Chelsea job would result in him returning to familiar surroundings.

That is because Rodgers bossed the west Londoners’ under-18 and reserve sides during the early stages of his managerial career.

What has Paul Brown said about Rodgers?

Brown understands Rodgers, who has won 10 trophies – including the Championship play-off final gong – has been desperate to move into the Chelsea dugout and he has not been afraid to make that clear.

The journalist is aware the Northern Irishman has contacts within the club and feels he should not be judged on Leicester’s underwhelming start to the season.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: “Brendan Rodgers has always wanted the Chelsea job. This is a job that he has made no secret, in private, of being up for.

“He has a good relationship with the club, he has history there and I think he has actually done a brilliant job at Leicester.

“He has been a little bit unlucky with the way things have gone because the finances there probably haven’t allowed them to push on the way he would have liked.”

Why was Tuchel sacked by Chelsea?

Tuchel’s dismissal came less than 24 hours after he lambasted his squad for showing no hunger or determination in their 1-0 Champions League group stage defeat at Dinamo Zagreb.

The German had only led Chelsea to seven Premier League victories since March, so it is clear they were on a downward slope under his rule.

It is understood that Tuchel’s relationship with some Blues stars had deteriorated, which also led to the decision to oust him.

Todd Boehly is on the lookout for a new manager for the first time since he led a consortium which completed a £4.25billion takeover of Chelsea in May and he has already been given permission to hold talks with Brighton & Hove Albion chief Graham Potter.
