USMNT Star Tim Weah Shares Details About ‘Weird’ Meeting With Trump in White House

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, taking place exclusively in the USA, is a good opportunity to show the world that the United States is prepared to host a major sporting event ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host alongside Canada and Mexico.

Reviews have been mixed for the tournament so far, with many fans calling out the poor attendance for most of the games and the high temperatures affecting the quality of play in venues like Los Angeles and Miami.

Off the field, US President Donald Trump has used the tournament to champion some of his views and political positions, with the eyes of the sports world set on his country.

Trump welcomed players from Italian giant Juventus to the White House in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, ahead of the team’s first game against Al-Ain later that evening.

Among the Juventus delegation were USMNT stars Weston McKennie and Tim Weah, as well as the club’s head coach Igor Tudor, general manager Damien Comolli and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The meeting quickly turned awkward when POTUS began talking about transgender athletes, asking the players if they thought a woman could join their team. The players simply shrugged, and when Trump turned to ask Comolli, the executive simply answered, “We have a very good women’s team.”

Trump also brought up the current conflict between Iran and Israel during the meeting.

Tim Weah Shares Thoughts on “Weird” White House Visit

“I had no choice but to go”

Juventus went on to batter the UAE’s Al-Ain 5-0 at Audi Field later that evening. Following the win, Weah was asked about that day’s visit to the White House.

“It was all a surprise to me, honestly,” Weah told reporters post-game. “They told us that we have to go, and I had no choice but to go. When he started talking about politics with Iran and everything, it’s kind of like, I just want to play football, man. It was a bit weird.”

While McKennie did not speak to the press about the visit, he has made his feelings about Trump quite clear, calling the US President “ignorant” and “racist” back in 2020.

Juventus had not publicly announced the visit beforehand, and the players were reportedly unaware they’d be participating in the PR event.

Head coach Igor Tudor told reporters that the experience was a “pleasure”, but FIFA officials refused any additional questions about the visit.
