What Has Happened to Oxlade-Chamberlain Since Liverpool Exit Amid Shock Transfer Links

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was once viewed as the future of English football. Coming up through the ranks at the famed Southampton academy, he followed in the footsteps of one Theo Walcott and joined Arsenal as a teenager with all the promise in the world and the future weight of a nation on his shoulders.

After establishing himself as a winger at the Emirates without setting the world alight, he would join Liverpool in 2017, transition into a central midfielder, and become an important utility man under Jurgen Klopp, winning the Premier League and Champions League.

However, after leaving the club in 2023 and making the move to Turkey to join Besiktas, Oxlade-Chamberlain has suffered a topsy-turvy couple of years that have seen him work under seven different managers and now looks set for a shock return to England.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Besiktas Career

The Englishman has played 15 times under current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

It wasn’t an easy start to life in Turkey for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who played just one full ninety minutes during the 2023/24 campaign. He looked set to find himself in the same bracket as Dele Alli, who had joined Besiktas himself the year prior but was often met with jeers in his 15 appearances.

With wages reportedly around £70,000 per week, the one-time Champions League victor was incredibly left out of the Europa League squad list as the club attempted to find new suitors for him. The 31-year-old was punished for giving up on his attempts to find a new team, according to Besiktas’ general secretary, Kaan Sakul.

Giovani van Bronckhorst failed to give Chamberlain a single minute during his tenure, but when Man United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge, he not only changed the fortunes of the club, but also of the Englishman too.

The England international has made 15 appearances since the Norwegian’s arrival and has managed to gain a more prominent role within the squad. However, it seems that may not be enough to secure his future, as another summer of transfer rumours appears to await.

Oxlade-Chamberlain a Target For Championship Club

According to a report from the Mirror, the issues regarding Oxlade-Chamberlain’s lucrative contract continue to plague both him and the club, and despite his upturn in form and prominence, the preference remains to get him off the books in the summer.

At the front of the queue when it comes to interested parties is Leicester City, where the midfielder could line up for yet another Red Devils icon in Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Foxes returned to the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League last season and are looking to rebuild for a swift return to the top flight. And it has been suggested that an ambitious move for Oxlade-Chamberlain could be on the cards.

It is not the first time the player has been linked with a Championship move either. Back in January, the 31-year-old was a reported target for Daniel Farke’s Leeds United as they looked to continue their promotion push. Wolves were also tipped as a potential destination but neither move came to fruition.
