Liverpool Could Sign ‘World-Class Superstar’ Instead of Wirtz

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to swoop for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo if they fail to sign top target Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz is Arne Slot’s ideal attacking signing this summer, and they are in a two-horse race with Bayern Munich to sign the 22-year-old. They have reportedly moved into pole position, with David Ornstein reporting that he’s favouring them over the Bundesliga giants.

The Reds have yet to agree on a deal with Bayer Leverkusen and may need a Plan B in case the transfer collapses. Rodrygo’s potential availability could see them move for the Brazilian, whose future at the Santiago Bernabeu is up in the air.

Spanish outlet SPORT reports that if Liverpool misses out on Wirtz, they could have Rodrygo in their sights. The 24-year-old has lost his status as an undisputed starter at Madrid following Kylian Mbappe’s arrival.

Rodrygo was one of Los Blancos’ superstars before the 2024-25 campaign, playing a crucial role in helping them win the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League last season. He prefers to play on the right wing but has had to be rotated across the frontline due to competition with Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

Liverpool has held a long-term interest in the “world-class superstar” South American, extending back to his youth days in Brazil. His agent once claimed that the Premier League giants were keen on signing him before he signed his first professional contract with Santos, but the Brazilian club decided not to sell.
