Jamie Carragher’s comments ahead of Wednesday night’s Europa League final have re-emerged and left the pundit with egg on his face after Tottenham defeated Manchester United in Bilbao. Ange Postecoglou delivered on his promise to bring silverware to the club in his second season in charge as the North Londoners beat a dismal United side.
Several had pegged United as the favourites going into the game despite the fact their last victory against English opposition came all the way back in March against relegated Leicester, but Tottenham’s doubters were proven wrong. One of them was Carragher, whose bold prediction immediately aged poorly in the aftermath of the final.

Ange Postecoglou Burns Jamie Carragher After Tottenham Win Europa League
Ange Postecoglou delivered on his promise to win Tottenham a trophy in his second season by guiding them to their first European honour since 1984.
The former Liverpool defender was extremly confident before the game
Speaking on the Overlap fan debate back in April, Carragher stated that he felt Postecoglou’s men had no chance of coming out on top in the Basque Country, citing the contrasting histories between the clubs when it comes to competing in major finals. Tottenham had last won a trophy back in 2008 when they beat Chelsea to win the League Cup, but had more recently lost their last four.
Meanwhile, despite their decline in recent years, United had won two in the last two years, notably the 2024 FA Cup final against Manchester City. Interestingly, Carragher also backed Bilbao to beat Tottenham had they overcome Ruben Amorim’s side in the semi-final.
“I can’t see Tottenham winning the trophy. You’ll get to the final but I can’t see you beating Bilbao in their own stadium in a final. I think that’d be tough for anybody. There’s no way Tottenham beat Man United in a European final. No chance.
“History, mentality. they are just a club who will find a way to win. Man United have got an ability to win games that they shouldn’t. They beat Man City in the FA Cup final last season. I just think the whole ‘Man United in a European final’ will be too much for Tottenham.”

In response to Carragher’s claims, the Tottenham fan he was in discussion with responded ‘just you wait,’ with his confidence ultimately rewarded as his side claimed their first European trophy since 1984.
